How Hard Is It to Get into Deer Hunting

Getting started in deer hunting can be extremely challenging for new hunters. It requires a lot of time, energy, money, and persistence. Many new deer hunters don’t know where to begin unless they have a mentor or a step-by-step guide to walk them through the process.

The majority of new deer hunters don’t have the skills, knowledge, or equipment that is needed make them successful hunters. Therefore, they must be dedicated to the process of learning how to hunt deer and push forward when things aren’t going as easy as they thought.

In this blog post, I’m sharing my top 5 tips for getting started in deer hunting. Following these tips will reduce the number of frustrations that many beginners experience in their first year of deer hunting.

Top 5 Tips for Getting Started in Deer Hunting

1. Follow a step-by-step guide to deer hunting

Many people quit before they ever get started because of how much there is to learn and do in the beginning. Going through this process is much easier with a step-by-step guide to follow.

2. Be patient

It takes time for a hunter to prepare themselves and their equipment for the first hunt. Once the hunt begins, it can take several hours, days, or even weeks before a shot opportunity presents itself. In my first year of hunting, I hunted about 20 times before killing my first deer. Hunting is a waiting game, but there are ways to improve the odds of getting shot opportunities that I teach through my website.

3. Set realistic goals and expectation

Many new hunters have unrealistic expectations that they can’t accomplish in their first year of hunting. This can take away from the fun of hunting and cause people to quit hunting all together.

When I started hunting, my goal was to shoot any deer that I could. Once I shot my first deer, my next goal was to shoot a buck. My first buck was a little 4 point. Once I shot that buck, my next goal was to shoot a bigger buck. I set hunting goals for myself every year.

4. Buy quality equipment

Deer hunters should purchase the best equipment they can afford. Good equipment helps make the hunt more enjoyable, more comfortable, and more fun. Also, quality gear performs better, lasts longer, and is easier to use.

5. Get support

Having a mentor, or a trusted source of information, will help educate new hunters how to reach their full hunting potential. Mentors should be chosen wisely. Choose someone that is achieving the same level of success that the hunter wants to achieve for themself. The mentor should also be a trustworthy and ethical hunter.

Conclusion

Deer hunting is just as challenging as it is rewarding. Once beginners complete their first or second year of hunting, success is more common and frustrations are less frequent.
